Hear Me Code

Shannon Turner is a full-stack developer and the founder of Hear Me Code, a nonprofit offering free, beginner-friendly women-only coding classes for over 850 women in DC. In addition to teaching and designing Hear Me Code's curriculum, she also serves as a mentor with Code for Progress.

Hear Me Code focuses on leadership development, peer mentoring, and community support to create the next set of women leaders in tech. By encouraging students to mentor new recruits and pass on what they've learned, Hear Me Code has turned over 40 students into teachers and teaching assistants. For these efforts, Hear Me Code was recognized as the 2014 "Best Social Good Startup" by TechCocktail, and Shannon was recognized as the 2014 "DC Web Woman of the Year" by DC Web Women.

In Shannon's spare time, she works on several side projects focusing on issues of social justice and civic tech, including Shut That Down, a website exposing which companies donate money to misogynist, racist, and anti-LGBTQ politicians; data visualizations showing the colleges and universities that fail to take campus sexual assault seriously; a website and twitter bot that tells you whether a movie passes the Bechdel test -- and suggests another movie if it doesn't; and games to help people discover, learn about, and share art from museums around the world.
